Qi, Qi2 and MagSafe: What to Check Before Buying a Charger

Qi and Qi2 are names used in the Wireless Power Consortium's wireless-charging standards and certification system. MagSafe is Apple's name for a charging and accessory system. When buying a charger, check the exact phone, charger model, case and power supply instead of treating those names as interchangeable promises.

A logo or magnetic attachment is a starting point for that check. The useful evidence is the specification and, where certification is claimed, the matching product record.

What each term tells you

TermWhat to look forWhat still needs checking
QiThe exact product's Qi certification and supported functionsCompatibility and performance for your phone
Qi2A Qi2-certified product and its stated version or capabilitiesWhether your phone and power setup support the same capability
MagSafeApple's compatibility information or a precise accessory claimExact phone, accessory model and power requirements
Magnetic case or ringThe case's intended phone and accessory pairingCharging support and certification, separately

WPC describes Qi2's magnetic attachment as a way to align devices and chargers. Its current overview covers both the earlier 15W Qi2 capability and Qi2 25W, introduced in July 2025. Reading “Qi2” alone therefore does not answer every version or power question. WPC's standards overview

Use the product record to check certification

WPC says certified products receive an identification number and appear in its database. Start with the official certified-product database and match the manufacturer and model to the listing you are considering. If a seller claims certification but the identification is unclear, ask for the exact record.

This is more precise than relying on a brand having some certified products. It also separates a product certification claim from loose wording such as “works with wireless charging.” A compatibility statement and a certification record answer different questions.

Keep a copy of the listing's model code when shopping. A comparison becomes much harder if one store page uses a family name and another uses a different version without saying so.

Read the MagSafe conditions for your phone

Apple's MagSafe support information lists compatible models and explains that charging behavior differs when its charger is used with non-MagSafe Qi-compatible devices. Its power guidance also depends on the charger model, phone and adapter. Use the current entry for the equipment you have, rather than transferring the fastest advertised rate to another combination. Apple's MagSafe instructions

A magnetic case can help an intended accessory attach, but it does not replace the phone's receiving hardware or establish the charger's certification. If you have not checked the phone itself yet, follow our model-by-model checking method first.

Compare a complete setup

Before choosing between two listings, fill in the same four fields for each. This exposes the missing information that a large wattage badge can hide.

  1. Phone: exact model and its official wireless-charging specification.
  2. Charger: exact model, supported system and any certification record claimed.
  3. Case: exact case and attached accessories, with their compatibility conditions.
  4. Power: the adapter and cable the charger requires, including whether they are supplied.

Then add the practical questions. Will the phone lie flat or stand upright? Can you reach it without shifting the keyboard? Will the charger fit beneath a monitor shelf? A technically appropriate pair still needs to work in the place you intend to use it.

If two chargers have different quoted power numbers, check what each number describes. Adapter output, charger input and the phone's wireless charging rate are separate measurements. Our wattage guide explains how to read those labels.

What this means for our model-style chargers

Desk Chargers' product information describes assembled desktop models and their documented features. We do not claim a verified Qi, Qi2 or MagSafe certification for either listing, and we do not guarantee 20W wireless delivery to a phone. If you need a particular certification or charging rate, establish that requirement before choosing a decorative design.

Use the desktop charger buying guide for the model dimensions and package questions, or send your exact phone and case details through Customer Help. A clear specification match is a better basis for the decision than a familiar term on its own.
